Why would they only offer the 2.0 diesel Cruze with an automatic? I feel like it would be a better car to have a 5 or 6spd in. Don't know what their thought process was on that.

The already niche market of compact diesel buyers in America prefer automatics?

I guess that's true. I guess I'm part of the three people that want a diesel with a stick. Back to dream land.

I have a small diesel and if I didn't have a manual it would be very awkward to drive. Being able to keep it in the right gear is a big part of avoiding the turbo lag.

The Panda is a diesel? That's cool.
Phyrxes once again has a wagon!

According to both VW dealerships I talked to when I bought my Jetta TDI the vast majority of the ones sold in the Metro DC area were Auto's as people don't want to commute in this mess with a manual. I would assume the same logic goes to the Cruze, they figure its high MPG commuting appliance and there is minimal market for the 3 pedal version so they don't bother.
That said if they sold the wagon cruze with a manual I would have added it to my cross shop list.

VW probably paid them to only offer it as an LTZ automatic sedan.
They need to bring over the wagon and hatchback bodies, the manual, and also offer the diesel engine on the base model LS and LT. If they ever did this, VW would be DONE with the US market and would have to leave this country in disgrace with their heads down.
I also hope they make a Cruze SS.

Don't forget the Cruze is all about MPG, and most manufacturers can program more efficient shifting (or ar least the same) as a manual these days. How many speeds auto?

I think it's a 6spd. I might be wrong though.

6 isn't bad to row but it's getting close. For the typical commuter looking for MPG it's too many. In my wife's 2.0T Passat Wagon (gas) it's perfect (rowing your own, that is)

I guess with the ECU it's not necessary but it'd still be nice.

At least they offer a car that's got a diesel in it.

You have to figure, wouldn't operating a stick get in the way of my Super Big Gulp filled with Mountain Dew?

Yeah, it would but there's no 7/11 near me so... not my problem.
